I bought this drill when I needed to complete a job that called for installing about 150 "redhead" concrete anchors in both sidewalk and block wall. I didn't run it the whole time, but a younger assistant ran it HARD. It never heated up more than it should have. It has the torque and hammer action to handle anything I could expect. After a very disappointing experience with a 1/2 in Craftsman electric impact wrench from Sears, I began my quest for something that could actually take lug nuts off my Acura. You would have assumed a $160 "Powerful Craftsman" could do it, but it barely moved one 19mm nut torqued to approx. 80 lb-ft. I needed something more. A google search revealed the Hitachi WR22SA on Amazon with an excellent review, so I bought one for myself.



Make no mistake.. it may be electric, but this thing is a very serious tool. First, it is BIG and HEAVY. The Amazon "Product Details" lists it at 17.2 LBS which sounds accurate. It will give your wrist a workout just holding it up, but it is worth it for the shear power it pumps out. It removes lug nuts with ease. I performed a brake job with it, and it saved me a huge amount of time and work. Because it is so powerful, it really doesn't twist in your hands as I expected it would.



The impacts happen so quickly, the nut/bolt is off instantly. Be careful, because once it enters free-spin and can throw things with force. If you plan on using smaller 1/2 impact sockets from NAPA, Sears, etc., you will need to buy a 3/4in to 1/2in adapter. They are very hard to find locally, but online, there are several stores that offer them. This way, you aren't limited to only large 3/4 socket sizes.



I would recommend this tool to anyone that does not have access to a powerful air compressor but needs something strong with 110 AC. The price is steep, but worth every penny.

After purchasing this screwdriver @$111+, I discovered it is not a screwdriver. It lacks the driver bit and you have to send to the company to get it. We could not find one to fit locally because it takes a longer shank than any we could find. The driver bit cost us $10.90 plus $5 because we didn't have a $30 order from Milwaukee and also S&H on top of that. It would have cost us $13 to return it to amazon where we purchased. For those prices we could have bought a screwdriver that was a screwdriver.

I've been using this tool every day for the past month for hanging drywall, fastening cement board, putting down decking and installing wood plank flooring. It has performed admirably and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase and use this tool again. For the price it is an excellent value - even when compared with other brands such as DeWalt, Makita, etc.... The "no-slip" depth adjustment is a great feature when you take of the gauge to back out screws - you just put the gauge back on without concern for readjustment, it's always right on.

My only reservation is the adjustment of the depth gauge itself. It becomes noticebly more difficult to use after only a little dust has collected - a frequent occurance with drywall and cement board. I found myself cleaning and lubing this part once a day when it was in constant use. If you're using the tool for the same depth all the time, I suppose this isn't a concern. Other than this one bad tick , the tool is very well made (it's a Milwaukee after all) and very easy to use.

 "1/2 Inch Hammer Drill" 2008-12-03

I almost want to say "medium duty" but that implies this is a lightweight, and it toys with Milwaukee's Heavy Duty slogan.



For me, however, this falls between the V28 hammer drill that I use for most small tasks and the 5342-21 Rotary Hammer that I use to drill through fieldstone, thus it fits a niche between the other tools.



It is an excellent tool, and for most users it will be the most powerful drill they need. Although I am somewhat disappointed in it, most of that fault lies with my intended use exceeding its capabilities.



Although I'm sure it is great for brick and masonry and maybe even concrete, it handles longer holes clear through fieldstone and river rock with a bit of difficulty. A good part of the fault lies in the availability of bits that don't fall apart (most brands didn't survive more than an inch or so of cutting; to be fair, I didn't try Milwaukee or Hitachi brand bits; Irwin seemed to work the best).



The only reason I'm taking any stars off whatsoever, is that the chuck seemed to loosen up on me with most of the 1/2" bits I tried. It had no problem hanging on to the smaller bits I used for pilot holes, but it let go of quite a few other bits. With the Irwin bits, you can fit the 1/2" ones into the teeth of the chuck in a certain way and they will hold beautifully, but if you put them in off of that ideal axis or if you have a round 1/2" bit, it tends to slip, and that's not a good thing.



Although I had to step up to the rotary hammer to meet my needs, I still expect to get use from this drill in more suitable mediums ~ wood decks and fencing, especially, and perhaps some brick or so forth.

Milwaukee's 5387-22 is a large, powerful piece of equipment. It was created to puch holes in masonry, but it is so smoth, you could use it for many other jobs. The drill is manufactured in Germany and the quality shows. Another reviewer mentioned the trigger is too sensitive, but mine seems fine.



The only caution I would mention is the balance of the drill. It is long and has a front-end wight bias. You will not be using this drill one-handed. The weight is not bad, but the length and forward location of the weight will cause you to need the side handle. This is actually good, because the torque of this baby would rip it out of your hand if a bit sticks in your work-piece. The side handle will help you keep it under control.



If you need a general drill, this is too much. If you need a STRONG drill that will probably last longer than your lifetime, this is it. Milwaukee makes a number of GREAT drills, and this unit is certainly one of them.



Be sure not to confuse this with another similar model: 5378-22. That drill is not nearly as good as this one. Just be sure to hold on with both hands. Once you use it, you'll know why.

It has been my experience with customer reviews that often they are posted too early and do not offer enough detail to be useful. Because of this I have waited for 6 months to post a review.



The Milwaukee 5387 hammer drill has been simply awesome. I am a professional voice/data cabling installer and have used this drill on job sites frequently and have been totally pleased with the quality and power of this drill. The fit, finish, and feel of this drill is first class. The casing has been very durable thus far with no cracking issues or the rubber on the backside of the grip peeling off.



This drill is on the heavy side and mainly towards the front - and can get tiring if holding it over your head for long periods of time.. However, I am gladly willing to trade a little extra weight for a tool this solid.



I have used this drill to beat 1" holes through concrete/spancrete, cinder block, and brick without any problems with heat or the motor bogging down. As others have said this thing is VERY powerful - it has snapped my wrists around a few times when the bit has bound up.



The chuck in this drill has been very reliable thus far - out of the box it was true and after 6 months of use I still have had no problems with it bending or warping or the jaws not holding the bits securely.



The detachable power cable is a wonderful feature - it is the same design found on other higher-end Milwaukee tools. The cord is a nice heavy yet flexible rubber, and long enough to be useful. I have not had any problems with the rubber on the ends of the cable wearing, cracking, or peeling.



I would definitely recommend this drill to any professional or anyone who demands a reliable drill that will last a very long time!

Great drill. The hammer drill feature is amazing. It has enough torque to get just about any job done. I would give it 5 stars, but the variable speed trigger is EXTREMELY sensitive. This makes it hard to use as a mixer for drywall, cement, stucco, etc. it also puts a great strain on the motor to use it for this purpose.

I have installed shower doors for about 9 years and used this bad boy on a jobsite when my Makita hammer drill just wasn't getting the job done. I bought one the next day and have been using it ever since. Drilling concrete is easy drill through 1 1/8" thick granite, thats a chore. But this thing blew right through it. I highly recommend this tool. This is one of those drills your great grand children will be using 50 years from now saying they don't make em like they used to.

This drill is big, not for people with small hands. Speed control is excellent, used it for driving wood screws and starting holes in metal. Plenty of power drilled through landscape timbers to drive 12" spikes into the timbers. I have not used the hammer drill function yet.

I would definately reccomend for most drilling jobs.

I've had this drill for a number of years and always liked the balance and it's good power for the size, but several issues always bothered me. The secondary grip doesn't in place, the plastic depth rod is a joke, the reverse switch is easy to bump during gloved use, no case is provided and it is easy to bump the hammer/drill mode switch during use. Recently mine burned out and the repair estimate was almost as high as the cost of a new one. So, time to go shopping. The similarities between the Bosch and Milwaukee tools makes me think they probably have a common factory origin. Looking at the Bosch hammer drill line I found a very similar tool but which addresses all of the shortcomings of the 5378. My replacement is a Bosch 1199VSRK. It is built a bit more ruggedly than the Milwaukee version, has a metal depth rod, a sturdier secondary handle and comes with a good case. I've seen the 1199VSRK as a reconditioned tool on Amazon for about $80, which is a screaming bargain. Bosch also offers a lower end 1194VSRK which looks very similar to Milwaukee's 5378. The 1194 is almost identical to the 5378 and between them I would choose on price, but the 1199 is the one to get IMO.

I have owned this drill for four years. Motor runs fine, plenty of power, the drill chuck which is critical on a hammer drill is junk. Made by ROHM. I will not buy anymore drills with a "Rohm" brand chuck. I also own the model this drill replaced, great drill, I see they have come out with a replacement for this one also Model 5387, looks like it has a good chuck on it. In 2005 Milwaukee was bought out by a chinese company, ITT. They would like you not to know that. If you do a lot of drilling in concrete buy a drill with a SDS chuck on it. Not a "One drill does it all". The SDS chuck alows the bit to hammer while the chuck remains still. Much more efficient not to vibrate the chuck and bit while drilling.

I bought this drill about a year ago in anticipation of a yearly construction project I do for a student group. During this project, my drill got banged up, had paint poured on it, and was abused and dropped from scaffolding, without ever quitting. Its major job was the (seemingly endless) drilling of 1" holes using old, blunt, overused spade bits. Despite the poor condition of the bits attached, my drill never slowed down, and the handle let me power through studs. Where others were getting wrist pain with their cordless drills, and having to change batteries, or re-tighten their keyless chucks, i just kept going. The chuck is SOLID, and lets you really clamp down on bits, and the metal housing for the drill's gearbox makes this thing practically indestructible. I even used this thing to drive several 3" deck screws and it wasnt that hard to maneuver, (though I dont think i'd want to be working overhead with this drill unless i was really in a pinch)



as a side note: my dad actually has this same exact drill, but with a keyless chuck, and though the keyless chuck is also made of metal and well designed, i've found that the keyed chuck simply provides better performance, and is worth the hassle of carrying a key around

I have used one of these for five or six years now. It is very strong and very tuff; I can not tell you how often this thing has bounced off a concrete floor and it still works like a champ.

Cordless drills are great, I use two of them constantly, but sometimes you just want a solid corded drill and this one fits the bill, strong but not too heavy or bulky; in fact I think that it is lighter than my 18v cordless.



I use it primarily for drilling pocket holes for building cabinets and such, when the batteries would have already drained on the cordless drills this one is still going strong.

I found that it was necessary to keep retightening the chuck if the operation involved any amount of vibration, like using a hole saw in plywood. I have a DeWalt drill with a keyless chuck and it stays tight in the same circumstances.



For some reason DeWalt includes a cheap plastic storage case with some drills but not with others. The cases are made of very flimsy material with crude fasteners. Buying one for a drill that comes only with its cardboard box involves spending nearly $40. Milwaukee and Makita provide sturdy plastic cases with their drills so I don't know why DeWalt does not do the same.

I bought this drill in early summer 2009 and have been using it quite regularly for weekend projects around the house. I found the drill to be quite well built and rugged. It is a very well balanced drill and quite powerful. A great deal for the price. There are two issues I have with the drill, both of which have been addressed by other reviewers;



1. The high pitched noise when the drill gets going can be quite annoying during extended use.

2. I don't see the point of having a speed control in this drill. The speed dial is extremely non-linear and you either get extremely slow or full speed with hardly any graduation in between.

I purchased this drill after using one. I use only high end tools which usually means high power. This drill is very compact and moderately powerded. Perfect for pilot holes and holes less than 1/2". My main drill is a Milwaukee Holeshooter and it will take your arm off no matter how strong you are. But pilot holes don't require that much power. The Hitachi also spins very fast which works real well with small holes. It can be used with one hand without worrying that it will break you in half if it gets caught. The trigger is okay and cannot compare to the precise trigger of my Milwaukee. It also makes a loose sound that most sub $100 drills make. You'll be happy if you drill soft material and don't require tons of torque. 5 year warranty with a case and 5 drill bits for under $50 is steal. My Milwaukee is a beast, but it's over kill 60% of the time for me. The Hitachi works great for the other 40% and is feather light!

I've been a carpenter on kauai for about 4 years and i really like this drill. It has enough power to bor som pretty big holes into pressure treated lumber but what i like is it doesn't have so much power that it will torque your wrist. I have an old milwauke with tons of power it's a really good drill but sometimes its better not to have so much power for example on a ladder when you can only hold the drill with one hand. so i give it 5 stars because it is exactly what i was hoping for and it is also heavy duty and at a good price.

I bought the 0234-6 last week from Amazon and I just got it. I specifically bought this brand because everyone said they were made in the good old US of A. But mine says MADE IN CHINA! Why Milwaukee? Why???? I would have gladly paid $40 more for a drill made in the USA. I really need this drill or else I would return it. I am very disappointed. The box says 5 year warranty. I will keep this review updated and report any issues I have with it. I hope it is just as good as the ones made in the USA but I have my doubts. Very sad that this is the direction that our country is headed in.



Everything works so far. Construction looks good but I have yet to put it to use. 5 Stars for now....

So, the Milwaukee drill was my very first power tool. I am so proud of myself for looking on Amazon at all these glowing reviews and taking the plunge to buy it (and modest too). I've used it with various bits on wood (oak, birch, pine, plywood) and on clay to drill a hole in the bottom of a beautiful glazed clay pot that I wanted to turn into a planter. It worked SO well! It's kind of heavy for me - I am typically using it for repetitive tasks, but the support handle that comes with the drill works wonders to eliminate wrist fatigue. Putting the bits in is SO simple and the forward/reverse switch is conveniently located right next to the trigger. It's powerful - way more powerful than I have needed so far... Overall, I'm really glad I bought this drill.

The Milwaukee Magnum corded drill is heavy and heavy duty. It is more substantial than the all plastic drills out there. It seems to have more of a gear reduction which relates into more power for those difficult drilling jobs. You can just feel the quality. I own a variety of Milwaukee tools and have no complaints about any one of them.

I'm a senior citizen who worked in factories for 45 years and a do-it-yourselfer and this the best power drill I have ever used. Not high RPM but smooth, steady and just keeps on tickin'. I can understand using battery power when you're nowhere near an outlet but for around the house, give me this motor, an extension cord and a chuck key!!
